I'm sure I'm leaving some things out, but I'm going by my Facebook timeline.

January:

Deschutes' arrival in Missouri! After almost a year, it's easy to take it for granted we can buy it off the shelves, but they have so many good regular and seasonal choices. Gumbo Bottoms in Jefferson City had the first tasting opportunity, then the Columbia release party included 44 Stone, 1839 Taphouse, and Uprise. The Columbia Tribune did a great spread on this in the Food section, too (featuring: my arm!). Here' a photo at the end of the night with all the Deschutes gang.

Our monthly tasting was the Blind Paper Bag tasting at 1839 Taphouse. I also wrote a post about a beer pairing class (with Mike Odette) and dinner by Inside Columbia magazine.

And how can we forget the annual Bell's beer dinner at Sycamore? Hopslam on tap and cask, plus the unforgettable Black Note Stout. Next year's is on sale today at noon!

February:

1839 Taphouse had their 173 Anniversary Party, featuring the last keg of Boulevard's Chocolate Ale in CoMo.

Jason and I went to the Big Chill, a beer and chili festival at 75th Street Brewery in KC. It was in a freezing, partially outdoor beer garden including Schlafly, Blind Tiger, Boulevard, Free State, among others, and 75th brought out their cellared collection.

"Beer and a Movie" series presented "Blazing Saddles" at our house. Bigfoot vertical 09-11 was a highlight.

True/False film festival was fantastic as always, sponsored by Schlafly and featuring appearances by James Franco and Morgan Spurlock.

March:

44 Stone had a Stone beer dinner, LeprechaunArchy pub crawl happened, CBE did another Beer and a Movie.

44 Stone had their 1 year anniversary party in conjunction with St. Patrick's Day. There was even a fancy cake!

Another new brewery was Six Row, from St. Louis, which had a release at 44 Stone and another at Sycamore.

April:

A group of us formed a team to play Geeks Who Drink trivia at Roxy's on Monday nights. Arrogant Bastards are still going strong (mostly).

Attended Parkville Microfest, which had a mobile app this year to help navigate your beer itinerary for the day. FYI, beef brisket bourbon beer isn't a good idea in reality.

We can't forget the Avery Tap Takeovers!! Split between Uprise, 1839 Taphouse and 44 Stone, we got some samples of some heavy hitters. Thank goodness 44 Stone had just implemented their small pour option!

The 2nd annual Missouri Beer Festival featured the debut of Columbia's Rock Bridge Brewery and Mother's Brewing out of Springfield (which finally made it to our market the end of this year.)

May:

I visited a friend in Lawrence, stopping by Free State, Blind Tiger, and bringing home a growler with a collaboration by those two, plus 23rd Street Brewing.

local Rock Bridge Brewery released a firkin of their summer seasonal, Lizard Pale Ale at Taphouse.

I visited a little beer town known as Denver for a conference. Stops included Cheeky Monk, Falling Rock, Wynkoop, and a huge beer haul was made.

44 Stone's live Tap cams made their debut.

Our tastings included a blind IPA/DIPA tasting at our house, where Phil's blackberry lambic blew everyone's mind, and an impromptu tasting at Jonathan's to unload some beer buys.

More press: The Missourian visited brew day with Holly and Jeff's crew. Como Collective went social with the craft beer scene.

June:

We had the fabulous CBE Summer Picnic. We also provided the Top 10 Reasons to attend, as if you didn't already know. Rock Bridge donated a firkin and a keg, which was awesome.

June-July I was moving into a new house, so things got a bit busy. But, the new fridge was stocked with summer beers, and many beers were shared on moving day.

The Columbia Beer Enthusiasts (CBE) have come out of hiding to schedule three upcoming tastings. As always, participants are asked to show up with a beer or two that fit the tasting's theme to share. Typically, two 12 oz. bottles or one bomber (22 oz. or 750 mL) do the trick. If you don't have beer to share, you can join in by paying $5, but where's the fun in that?

The three tastings are as follows...

On Sunday, July 22nd at Sycamore, the CBE will hold an "Off the Vine" tasting. Beer enthusiasts are to bring lambics, sours, and fruit beers to share. A nice list of lambicscan be found on Beer Advocate's site. Technically, lambics fall under the category of sour ales, but sour beers include many more styles such as Berliner Weisse, Flanders red and brown ales, and gueuze. Of course, one could also peruse BA's list of fruit beers for more choices.

The Best of Summer tasting on August 25th will celebrate the beers of summer. This event will happen at 4PM on 1839 Taphouse's patio. What defines a "summer beer" is left up to interpretation, but the club suggests summer seasonals, cream ales, golden ales, and blondes as possible styles to enjoy.

Finally, 44 Stone is hosting the "Aged to Perfection" tasting. For this tasting, participants are asked to unearth beers they have been saving for a year or more. Verticals where several vintages of the same beer are tasted in chronological order are encouraged. The tasting will start around 3PM. Then, hang around for dinner afterward. If you don't have any beers that are over a year old, you can always search local shelves and coolers for older vintages or beers that we can use in a vertical tasting.

For more on these events and all-things-beer-related in CoMo, join the Columbia Beer Enthusiasts on Facebook. Also, be sure to RSVP to these events and participate in the discussion so that members can coordinate beers to share. Also, homebrews are welcome. There's no better place to get feedback on your homemade brew than a CBE meeting.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10546958494179349497noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-142089078037846001.post-41181513062362946572012-06-12T06:50:00.000-07:002012-06-12T06:50:17.359-07:00Top Ten Reasons to Attend the CBE Summer Picnic

The Columbia Beer Enthusiasts are holding their annual summer picnic this Saturday at Albert-Oakland Park, off of Blue Ridge Road. Everyone is welcome, even if you have never been to a CBE event before. Spouses, friends, children, and dogs are all welcome. (However, anyone expecting to consume beer should be 21+, of course.)

The picnic will take place in Shelter #3, located near a playground, restrooms and an aquatic facility. Here's the map. There is a Family Aquatic Center with a children's play area which costs $3.75 for adults and $2.50 for kids.
The picnic starts at noon, but all are welcome to come any time throughout the afternoon.

The CBE provides burgers and dogs, but please bring a side or dessert and beers to share.
This is a great opportunity to come meet and greet fellow beer enthusiasts and provide input about the kind of craft and homebrew beer events you'd like to have.

In case you're still debating whether or not to come, CBE president Jade Elwess provided the following top-ten reasons to attend this weekend's picnic:

10. Swimming - As mentioned above, the family aquatics center provides families a chance to cool off...or to sober up.

9. Food - The CBE provides burgers and hotdogs, but many CBE members like to bring foods that pair well with various beers. Of course, for many of us, beer is just liquid bread.

8. Games (washers, frisbee golf, volleyball...) - Depending on what equipment people bring with them, friendly games have been known to break out during the picnic. They're even more challenging after a beer or two.

7. Free to attend - There are few things one can do for free in CoMo. The CBE picnic is one of those things.

6. Hopefully good weather, no monsoons/heat waves in June - We've had this picnic in a rain storm as well as 100-degree weather. Luckily, there's a shelter and cold beer to keep you dry and cool.

5. Be an active voice in planning future events, tastings, give us feedback - We'd like to hear from you all as to what kinds of events you'd like to see in the future. This is a great opportunity to get your voice heard. Who knows? Maybe you'll decide to be an officer...

4. See the latest in Cabana wear, Hawaiian shirts, plaid shorts, etc. worn by CBE members - There are hints at a mankini, but I'll believe it when I see it.

3. Families are welcome - Just because it's a beer event doesn't mean kids and spouses can't come. Besides, you may need someone to drive you home.

2. People--come mix and mingle with the CBE and get to know us - Stop lurking online. Come, meet, and talk to real human beings.

1. Beer, beer, beer. - There is always a great mix of all kinds of beer. Bring any kind. CBE members often bring homebrews, that special bottle in the back of their cellar, or just a tried and true favorite from the store. Just don't forget to drink water, too.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10546958494179349497noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-142089078037846001.post-79410481351846617912012-01-20T18:32:00.000-08:002012-01-20T18:34:51.970-08:00Craft Beer EventsLong time, no blog! I know. That doesn't mean there hasn't been a ton of craft beer events going on in the area. I mean, Deschutes Brewery is here! They hosted events at Gumbo Bottoms in Jeff City, and recently in Columbia at 44 Stone, 1839 Taphouse and Uprise Bar. In fact, Abyss just hit town today and many stores are sold out. Supposedly, only 5 cases of the limited releases are allocated between Columbia, Jeff City and Fulton. I am pursuing Jeff City, but Abiy's had not gotten the Abyss, XXIII or Stoic as of today. I got a bottle of everything but the Abyss (HyVee on Nifong), plus an unexpected Chocolate Ale (Abiy's). Anyway, we had a great time meeting the Deschutes fellows and look forward to seeing them for a future beer dinner. There should be something in next week's Tribune food section about our little party.
Last night, I attended Chef Mike Odette's Brewmaster's Dinner: Pairing Beer With Food. The new Culinary Adventures program located in the old Grindstone Brewery has cooking classes, and this is one I didn't want to miss. This place has one main kitchen/classroom with monitors where you can watch the cooking demo. We listened to Mike give an overview of tips on pairing beer and food while we enjoyed snacking on spicy caramel corn with Tallgrass Ale. We were given recipes and put into groups to each try one recipe together. My group got fondue, but there were so many people crowded around the one stove that people had to take turns. Then we retired to the dining room for the tasting of the food and beer pairings.

Goose Island Sofie with Cheese Fondue

Deschutes Mirror Pond with BBQ Pork Belly Sliders

Southern Tier Jahva with Coffee Anglaise over a chocolate brownie

There was then more of an informal discussion, when Fred Parry asked Mike about Sycamore and then Paul Wissman of the local Scheppers distributor, spoke some about the beers and breweries. It was opened up for an audience Q &A. Then we got to take home a goody bag: the BBQ sauce and rub made in the class, which is Sycamore's recipe used for their BBQ pork belly sliders. Score! I can't wait to try these. We took away the recipes for everything we ate, too.

As you can see from the list below, dark beers can be awfully varied and we barely scratched the surface of possible styles. This was our first tasting in a while. We held the get-together at Uprise for the first time and plan to be back in the near future. Be on the lookout for a holiday tasting and Yankee Swap this December for paying members. Sometimes, different pairings worked better. This worked much better than last time. I had fun, learned things, and really appreciate Dave's help in putting this event on!
This is not a list for people with kids in tow--I’ll leave that to someone else to do the “family friendly” list. I didn’t go to Mizzou for school and I don’t watch sports, so you won’t find any of that here. I’m simply a person who likes good food and good beer and supporting my local establishments. I know I left many things out, including some fine restaurants that I would consider “special occasion” places, but are not part of my regular haunts. In fact there is such a turnover of restaurants that I can’t even keep track of what’s coming, going, or moving, so you should consult Show-Me Eats for that.
The Blue Note is a local landmark that’s been around for 25 + years. I’ve been going to see shows of all kinds there since college. Not only do they get pretty big names, but you could also catch a local showcase for cheap, a dance party, or a burlesque show. The smaller stepsister of the Blue Note is Mojo’s, which focuses more on local and indie bands. They have an outdoor patio with happy hour specials. Niether place is really a “beer bar,” but it’s usually possible to find something you like in the line-up. The Blue Note has recently been serving Ranger IPA on tap and Mojo’s will have Lagunitas IPA, for example.
May 7th is National Homebrew Day, and as it turned out, there were a lot of beer-related events going on, all on the same day. I stopped by Phil's, where he was doing a brewing demo with a saison. Phil has a great set up in his garage, plus a nice bar with homebrews always on tap, so it's always a nice place to hang out. He had a rye beer and a pale ale with calypso hops--very refreshing. Alas, I had a beer festival to attend, so I couldn't keep it up.
The first Annual Missouri Beer Festival was sponsored by Missouri Life Magazine.
This was the first year of the Missouri Beer Festival at the Stoney Creek Inn. Unfortunately, it was too gorgeous of a day to be indoors, but with Missouri weather it was a safe choice. I met Kate there and made our way around the room. Prison Brews was right in the middle, so we started there. They only had two choices: Gone A-Rye Pale Ale and Prison Town Brown. I have eaten lunch there, since I work in Jefferson City, but not had a beer there. I should go there and get the sampler since I wanted to try more. The rye was pretty good, but Phil's tasted like an actual piece of rye bread, so that's hard to beat.

Next was Public House from Rolla. They had a stout and a mild. I admit, mild is not my favorite style, so I'm not the best judge. I like my stouts* a little more robust, too. I really did their tree logo and was tempted to buy a tulip glass from them. But, more power to them for organizing AHA events. I see from their website they are hosting a screening of Beer Wars, which is a cool idea. They aren't a brewpub at this point, just a brewery.

I think my favorite beer of the day was Schlafly's AIPA. Man, this was a delicious beer. Others I sampled were Tallgrass Halcyon Wheat, Tin Mill Amber, Crown Valley Amber, Broadway Brewery's APA, 1839 Taphouse's own Taphouse Ale (and pizza with beer in the crust). Boulevard didn't offer anything different but I still had a Two Jokers and advocated for producing the new hoppy wheat.

There were some stranger elements in the mix, like the Harley Davidson tent with motorcycles and a country whiskey bar that had "Vegas Bombs." As I told everyone, I am way too old to do anything with "bomb" in the title in the middle of the day. Or anytime, actually.

All in all, I'd say it was successful for this first-time event. Hopefully the CBE can work with them next time on having a booth or something. They could use some help with marketing to the beer geeks. Some suggestions I would make include providing a tasting glass and list of the vendors for note-taking.

Now off to the final event of the night, a blowout with Hellbender Brewing!

*Update: The Public House guys brought their stout and mild in kegs to Hellbender's party. Getting to take my time and sample the stout again, I really enjoyed it. Hellbender had their Concession Black IPA, pepper beer, cask ale, and Gary from Schlafly brought a sixer of AIPA, and also the Hop Toddy. That was a treat. I think the bottles are limited in the area, but Sycamore has promised a keg waiting in the wings. The honey and lemon really come through. I wanted to let it get warm but I couldn't put it down long enough.
We had a reservation at 11 for a tour of the Boulevard Brewery. The tour is definitely worthwhile and the newer building is really impressive. We saw the barrel room where many of the Smokestack beers are aged, the fermentation tanks, the filtration system, the packaging room (not running that day), and then the gift shop and tasting room. They have a nice space to rent for meetings and parties with an outdoor patio that overlooks downtown KC. The options at the tasting room were the Singlewide, the stout, porter, Tank 7, pilsner, wheat, pale ale, the amber, and a new hoppy wheat that was delicious. We got a secret sample of a dubbel aged in cedar they are working on, too.
Their beer menu had a lot of big beers and Belgians and I finally just settled on a McCoy's Hog Pound Brown. Most everyone else had New Belgium's Le Terroir. I had the Kobe hamburger with truffle fries, and everything tasted great. I don't think anyone had any complaints. By the time we got out of there and headed to Parkville, I think it was after 2:00.
We heard grumblings from people leaving Microfest that it was already sold out. We got up to the tent and found out it was. I don't think any of us expected that! One member hadn't bought a ticket online, but we got that sorted out and got him in as a guest. We more or less started going down the line of the breweries we hadn't had or weren't familiar with. The lines were long, but the timing worked out so that you drank your sample in line for the next one and were ready to fill up by the time you got up to the next one.

Upstream Brewing (Omaha): I really wanted the Children of the Peppercorn Saison, but it was out and I had the stout instead. I tried someone else's rye, which was very gingery. According to the description, it is based on the cocktail called Horse Feathers, with ginger beer and rye.
Empyrean Brewery (Lincoln): Bourbon Barrel Oatmeal Stout, a "sessionable" bourbon barrel
Spilker Ales (Cortland, NE): Hopluia was all that they had, but it was good.
Modern Monks (Lincoln): Espresso Porter was too much for most people, but right on for me.
Lucky Bucket (Elkhorn, NE): Had the Lucky Bucket IPA, which was very floral if I remember correctly.
Nebraska Brewing Company (Papillion, NE): Infinite Wit was very citrusy and refreshing.
Stone: Can't get enough, so we stood in the longest line to say hi to Nate. I had the Cali-Belgique.
Broadway Brewery: We're there all the time, so we left it up to others to consume. It seemed to be popular and I've already read positive comments. They are also pouring at next weekend's Missouri Beer Festival in Columbia.

For dinner we hit All Star Pizza in Parkville. This place had a good selection of taps with lots of Stone left. I had Firestone Walker Double Jack. The Thai Pie pizza was good, too. Got some laughs at seeing other folks obviously coming from the Microfest, having trouble using car door handles and walking straight. Luckily none of them were driving. We headed back, with nobody getting drunk, sick, injured, dehydrated, or dropping their tasting glass. Winners!

If I left anything out to recommend, please leave it in the comments. I ran out of time to try everything.
Jadehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16405091092062425803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-142089078037846001.post-36332971186418102352011-04-25T12:21:00.000-07:002011-04-25T12:38:37.147-07:00CBE Update: Spring & SummerRight before the Stone festivities kicked off Saturday night, the CBE officers met up to plan the next few months of events. Below is what we have so far. Suggestions are always welcome.

The Kansas City/Parkville field trip roster is set, but you are more than welcome to join us this Saturday, April 29. We plan to leave Saturday morning at 8:30 from the Schnuck's parking lot. You'll have to come up with your own transportation at this point, but you can carpool with us to Boulevard where we have a tour scheduled. There's more information concerning the Parkville Microfest here.

National Homebrew Day is Saturday, May 7. Several folks are planning to host demos and/or brewing sessions on this day. An official event <s>will be</s> has been posted on Facebook, but if anyone is interested in participating or hosting a brew event on the 7th, leave a comment here or on the Facebook group.

After the brewing is done, Hellbender is planning to host its latest party. Stay tuned to their blog and/or Facebook page for details and start times. Typically, the boys at Hellbender limit their party to friends and CBE members, but if you're new, befriend them now and sneak in.

On a Monday in May, we will hold a Rye/Black IPA tasting at Sycamore. So, round up your favorite rye beers and/or Cascadian Dark Ales/Black IPA's for this official CBE tasting. All regular fees apply. $30 will get you a year's membership. $5 will get you in if you bring beer, $10 without beer.

In June, we're looking at cheese and beer pairing at a location to be determined. Unlike the last time, at this tasting we will be asking for folks to bring cheese. The CBE will purchase 4-5 styles of beer for the pairing. There will be no membership fees due at this event. More details to come.

The official CBE event for June will be a "Wild Night" hosted by the Elwess household. We will allow folks to decide just what "wild" means. Does it have to do with fermentation? Strange ingredients? High ABV? You decide.

July (which is a long way off) will feature two events. There will be the annual picnic which is an open event for anyone interested in meeting other beer nerds and homebrewers. We only ask that folks bring some beer to share and a covered dish. A date and location will be announced as soon as we have more information to share.

The other July event will be a West Coast tasting. So, any beer brewed in California, Oregon, Washington, or Alaska is welcomed. This will be an official CBE tasting where all applicable fees apply.

Last, but certainly not least, we are planning to bring back the Members Only Tasting. This was a popular event last year and we don't want to not have one again this year. The Members Only tasting will happen in August. Before we can plan any further, there will be a survey put out that will help us identify the beers you'd like to try. Again, this tasting will have the applicable fees attached.

So, that's one official CBE tasting a month for the next four that you should attend. Also, feel free to join us for any of the other events or invite non-members so that we may infect them with our "illness." Watch the Facebook page, the website, and this blog for details on all the events described above.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10546958494179349497noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-142089078037846001.post-60712764859421952622011-04-16T18:25:00.000-07:002011-04-16T18:25:38.244-07:00Blind Belgian Tasting

Thanks to Phil who hosted and created the scorecards to help us navigate our way through the Belgians. We scored each one on bouquet/aroma, appearance, flavor, mouthfeel, and overall impression. Just for fun, we also guessed whether each was really made in Belgium or not. The only was that was from Belgium ranked number one, the quad.Jadehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16405091092062425803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-142089078037846001.post-79877498531873381542011-04-14T20:25:00.000-07:002011-04-14T20:25:42.058-07:00CBE mid-April UpdateSorry about the lag in posts, but there are some things to keep you up-to-date on...
Neither is Irish, actually.

I experienced one St. Patrick's Day while I was in Ireland for a semester, and the holiday is very simple: good Guinness, good music, good craic. That's it. Nothing is dyed green. There was supposed to be a big parade, but I was there during the big foot and mouth disease epidemic of 2001 and everything was canceled so the rural farmers wouldn't bring it into Galway. Wipe your feet, stay in the bars. And so we did. It was grand.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be one big gathering place for traditional music and people who don't want to drink green beer from Das Boot. Here are the events I have found going on in the area. Since St. Pat's Day is during the week, the events span both the weekend before and the weekend after. Some of the concerts are from The Central Missouri Celtic Arts website, so you can find links to the artists there.

Saturday March 12:
Jefferson City Irish Parade, 2:00
The headquarters is Paddy Malone's pub, a cozy pub just across the bridge.
The pub opens at noon.

Super Bowl Party - The location has been updated. There are limited seats on the couch, so RSVP ASAP. Also, plan to bring food and beer (of course). This event is open to non-members.

Homebrew Only Tasting - This was promised and Josh Rein delivered. On February 13th at 4:00 PM, Josh will host a tasting limited to homebrews only. More details to come. Relax. Don't Worry. Have a homebrew. This event is open to non-members, but is limited to 10 guests.

Porters/Stout Tasting - Bring a stout, porter, or one of those cellared beers you saved for the cancelled tasting this past week to Flat Branch on February 27th at 4:00. This is for members and all regular charges apply (membership OR $10 if you don't bring beer and $5 if you do bring beer).

The last of the Hopslam is set to be unleashed on the public at Uprise Bar this Wednesday. If this doesn't happen on Wednesday, I won't bother posting anything more on Hopslam.

There will be a field trip to Kansas City in April. Contact a CBE officer for details. If you don't know a CBE officer, leave a comment here and we'll get back to you.

That should do for now.
January has nearly passed us by without so much as one tasting. Luckily for you, the CBE has one event before February. Additionally, there are two more events planned for next month.

On Monday, January 31st, Broadway Brewery will be hosting our cellared beer/barley wine tasting. So, dust off those bottles in the back of your cellar and bring them in for this tasting. If you are not one to save beers for more than a year, there are plenty of options in the stores. Besides finding newer versions of some of the proposed beers on hand, a careful inspection of labels will reveal there are many already-cellared beers waiting for you. I've personally noticed several vintages of Schlafly's barley wines and imperial stouts from previous years still occupying shelf space all around Columbia.

To RSVP, go to either the Facebook group or the CBE Groups site. Be sure to list the beer(s) you plan to bring. The tasting will get underway around 8:00 PM. We'll conduct the tasting differently as we'll ask that you give your beers to a CBE officer so that we can pace and sequence the beers. As usual, the tasting fees apply if you are not a CBE member. $5 with beer, $10 without.

The following Sunday, February 6th, is the Super Bowl party, hosted by members Kate and David. Although the pregame show starts sometime this week, our hosts ask that you show up around 5:00 PM. Kids and family members are welcome. This is a free CBE event. There will be food, but contributing to the effort (both food and beer) is encouraged. RSVP here and/or here and list any beer and food you plan to bring.

From 4-7 PM on Sunday, February 27th, Flat Branch will host our porter/stout tasting. Again, tasting fees apply to non-CBE members. RSVP here and/or here.

Also, in February, we are tying to organize a homebrew-only tasting. If you have any interest in participating and/or hosting, please let a CBE officer know or leave a comment on this blog.

We are still working on a road trip to Kansas City in April. There will be more word on that as information is gathered. CBE members will get first dibs on spots in the van. So, it behooves one to join ASAP.

As always, keep up with CBE happenings on Facebook, Groups, Twitter, and through our Google Calendar.
I thought I'd condense it, since there's a lot in my RSS feed today.

Evan Benn of Hip Hops column in the STL Post-Dispatch reports on the opening of the new Urban Chestnut Brewery on Wednesday with 5 of their beers on tap. Read more about the brewery and sign up for their newsletter or read their blog here. He also talks about the new Parma Grill (not quite open yet) that will take over Mattingly Brewery's former space.

In addition, a Hip Hops mobile beer app will be unveiled on Friday. I can only assume it will focus on St. Louis breweries and stores, but good to know for future roadtrips. Between that and OnTapKC, we can find out about beer releases sooner. Now all we need is an app for CoMo. Developers....? I've been playing around with Untappd which is a mobile website rather than an app, so you can share your beers/location with your friends through that site, and choose whether to also post on Facebook or not. You earn badges for adding certain beers to your roster.

The other rumor going around is that Green Flash Brewery is scouting around in Missouri. That would be another welcome addition to our shelves in 2011. Stl Hops got it straight from the horse's mouth that it will be July/August. I brought a bottle of their stout back from California and found Le Freak in Chicago and enjoyed them both. Oh, and in case you're wondering which Firestone Walker beers are coming, here you go.

Locally, the Hopslam frenzy is nearly over, but we're still waiting to hear when Uprise Bar at Ragtag will tap their keg and bring out last year's bottles they saved. CBE has several events coming up: the cellared/aged beer tasting on Jan. 31st, the Super Bowl party, and the stout/porter tasting in Feb. Be sure to RSVP and report what you're bringing on our Facebook page.

Update: Hip Hops also posted a good St. Louis Brewery Guide today.

Jadehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16405091092062425803noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-142089078037846001.post-14086567966412038512010-12-20T18:29:00.000-08:002010-12-28T06:47:50.148-08:002011 Schedule of EventsRecently, using some of the survey results, the CBE officers got together and mapped out the year's events. None of the dates nor sequence is set in stone, but this schedule should allow CBE members and potential members to stock their cellars and beer fridges with beers to share at future tastings. Also, this schedule should help in planning out your calendars for the year.

More details as far as specific times, dates, and locations are still to be determined. We are looking to schedule events at a variety of times and locations so that we can include as many members and interested parties as possible. In the meantime, look through the lists below and leave suggestions in the comments. There are at least two events planned per month.
It was a busy weekend for CBE members.

Friday, several of us hit the streets downtown to celebrate one member's birthday. We started at CBE favorite Sycamore with pork belly sliders and various selections from their extensive beer list. It's worth noting that all Sycamore bar menu items and specified beers on tap are half off during happy hour.

We then sauntered over to Broadway Brewery just down the street. Several of us enjoyed Broadway's Winter Warmer while other's raided Broadway's nice bottle and guest tap list. We weren't there for long as we had other stops to make.

A detour was taken down Ninth to Top-Ten Wines. Out came the Goose Island Nightstalker, He'Brew "13", and ping-pong table as this haven for the wine-obsessed was invaded by a bunch of beer nerds.

The night was completed at Uprise where we all sipped on our beers outside, on the patio.

It's great to know that we have so many good options to fill our craft beer needs. We didn't even make it to Flat Branch and we still filled the evening with great beers.

This wasn't an official CBE event, but there's no reason more of us can't organize such get-togethers on the website or Facebook group page. Feel free to use these forums to schedule the kinds of beer events you want. There certainly is an audience on either site.

Saturday rolled around and several members met at my house for the Spiked Beer Tasting. Normally, would never subject ourselves to drinking bad beer, but in the name of science, we carried on. Jarrett walked us through each spike, helping us identify what we were tasting and what caused each off flavor. And because we all homebrew, there was talk of a collaborative beer to only be known as "Nanna".

Afterwards, we washed the bad taste from our mouths with some good beer.

Sunday was a big night for the craft beer community in general as Discovery Channel's Brew Masters debuted. The show created quite a bit of buzz on Twitter and in the blogosphere as well as among CBE members. Some discussion can be found on Facebook, the CBE site, and even on at least one member's own beer blog.

What did you think of Brew Masters? Will you watch it again? Is it just an infomercial for Sam Calagione's Dogfish Head Brewery? Should the CBE organize an event around future episodes?

What do you think about more spiked beer or other homebrew events? What are you thoughts on more CBE (official or unofficial) pub crawls?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10546958494179349497noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-142089078037846001.post-87972665327006883832010-11-15T22:16:00.000-08:002010-11-15T22:16:12.407-08:00Colorado Beer TastingDespite a few homebrews produced here in Columbia, a beer from Idaho, and one arguably from Maryland, the Colorado tasting went off without a hitch. We tasted a nice variety of beers. The '07 La Folie and Avery Beast vertical seemed to garner the most attention. Here's the lineup...
The results of the survey can be found here for the most part. I've taken the liberty to compile the write-in answers below since the results link won't do that for me.

Read through the results. Tell us what you think they mean. Is there something we missed with this survey?
In the meantime, be sure to come out for the Colorado beer tasting tonight at Sycamore at 9PM. A list of beers had will be posted here. There was plenty to cover as we have a couple of busy months ahead of us. First of all, we did not receive a treasurer's report, but Jason assures us that there is money in the bank...

Anyway, the first order of business was the charity beer dinner at Sycamore in January. Tickets go on sale November 9th. The dinner will start at 6PM and will cost $60 per person. There is a limit of 60 people. So, be sure to order your tickets right away. We'll be unveiling more details regarding the charity and incentives for the dinner as they come. Check the Sycamore website for more details.

Speaking of the charity beer dinner, we are in need of some volunteers. At a minimum, we will need 5-6 CBE members to volunteer. Sycamore is providing some volunteers of their own and career center's culinary arts program is also chipping in. Just contact the CBE officers if you're interested in helping.

Our next tasting will take place on November 15 at 9PM at Sycamore. The focus will be on beers brewed in Colorado. So, dig out your favorite beers from Oscar Blues, Avery, Great Divide, Ska, etc. for this state-themed tasting. Here's a list from RateBeer of Colorado breweries.

On November 20th, some CBE members will be getting together for a tasting of spiked beers. What this means is that we're getting our hands on some spikes that can be added to beers in order to demonstrate what an irregularity might taste like. Although this event would be particularly interesting to homebrewers, even the casual beer enthusiast might get something out of it.

In December, we are starting a new tradition with the first ever CBE Yankee Swap. Members and guests will be expected to bring a beer-related gift (or just beer) worth no more than $15 for an exchange. Names will be drawn from a hat and the first person chosen will have his or her choice of the loot. However, the second person may choose to steal the first person's choice or pick something new. This carries on until all the gifts are exchanged. People should bring beer as well for this event.

For the Yankee Swap, we are still looking for a location. If you would like to provide space for this get-together, let a CBE officer know. The person who volunteers space will determine whether we have the swap on December 11th or 18th.

There will be more to announce and share in the coming months. In order to keep track of beer events in and around Columbia, you can check out the calendar below. If you have a Google Calendar yourself, you may also subscribe to the CBE calendar or simply return to the blog.
His presentation on the Science of Brewing Beer was well-attended and will possibly give the university fodder for starting their own brewing program[1]

Also on hand was sponsor Cool Stuff, who, by the way, is offering free membership to their homebrew club to any CBE member. I know some of us have complained about Cool Stuff's inventory in the past, but what they have to offer has grown incredibly in the last year. Be sure to check it out!

Below, you'll find John's presentation broken into five parts[2]. Eventually, I'll post the link to the video of his talk.

The British Isles tasting was a success, judging from our poll numbers. Members scored the tasting a 3.7 (on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest), despite their overall impression of British beers rating a 3 average. Members cited IPA's, stouts, and scotch ales as their favorite styles of the evening. Jason's Bitter Beer Face IPA was the favorite beer sampled. Our host Flat Branch rated a 4, no doubt thanks to Jarrett's hospitality (read: Scotch).

The group is considering charities for an upcoming beer dinner. So far, Pints for Prostates, American Liver Foundation, and the local slow foods movement were mentioned as possible benefactors. The Columbia food pantry has also been mentioned as a charity to support. The officers are currently looking into charities and would welcome any suggestions.

Speaking of the charity dinner, former president, Jamie, is organizing a brew day for the CBE to provide its own beer. Here's what Jamie has to say about this brew session on the CBE website:

On January 9th, Sycamore and the CBE will be co-hosting a charity beer dinner that features beers from different Missouri breweries. The CBE has also decided to donate it's own beer (as brewed by CBE members) to this event. The brewday will be at my house and is tentatively set for October 17th and will probably be a night brew session (i.e., it will start around 5pm).

A few of us met last week to discuss the beers that we will be brewing and came to the decision to brew two 8-9% imperial stouts. The base recipes will be nearly identical but one of the beers will be secondaried with oak /bourbon (this beer will also have some coffee malt) and the other beer will be infused with maple/vanilla beans. For those interested in participating (brewers and/or non-brewers), just RSVP or post a note below. If you would like to help out with drafting the recipes just let me know and I'll send what Matt E. and I have worked on thus far.
We would really appreciate any and all CBE members or those interested in contributing to this special brew to step up and volunteer. Donations of time and/or money would be appreciated. Simply RSVP at the CBE event site and plan to show up ready to help on October 17.

Speaking of brewing, Phil is organizing an off-tasting event. Here's what Phil has to say:

As you might have read in the blog, Jarret and I are trying to get some people to join us in an Off-Flavors Tasting. This would consist of flavor "spikes" that you add to a beer to help recognize certain flaws in a beer.

The following flavors spikes will be in this tastings:

DMS

Diacetyl

Oxidized

Iso-amyl Acetate

Acetlaldehyde

Infection

One kit of spikes is enough for 20 people and cost $180 so if we find 20 people who are interested it will only be $9 each (some of which might be covered by CBE, still discussing that)

I need to get a feel of how many people would be interested in attending, so please post below if you are interested.
Again, to let Phil know of your interest, visit the CBE site. While this event seems brewer-centric, all interested parties are encouraged to come. The most important thing is that people RSVP and stick to their commitment as the spikes are not free.

This post is getting long, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention our two main events for October. On Monday, the 23rd, the CBE will be meeting at a member's home for some fall seasonals. That means, bring your favorite stouts, porters, Oktoberfests, pumpkin ales, whatever you consider to be a fall seasonal beer. There is a limit of 25 people, so be sure to RSVP.

Finally, our own John Cannon is presenting "The Science of Brewing" for the University of Missouri's Saturday Science series. John throws down the science at 10:30 AM in the Monsanto Auditorium. Details can be found at the CBE site.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10546958494179349497noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-142089078037846001.post-58029950976049005432010-09-28T20:38:00.000-07:002010-09-28T20:38:34.988-07:00British Isles TastingThe CBE (members new and old) met at Flat Branch for an intimate tasting of beers from and inspired by the British Isles. We enjoyed IPA's, Scotch Ales, stouts, ESB's, and other assorted styles from our former imperial overlords. The beers drew mixed reviews, but, as usual, the discussion of beer and brewing was lively.

Below is a rundown of the beers sampled. Homebrews are identified with (HB).:

Dry Dock English IPA

Great Divide Claymore Scotch Ale

Jason's Bitter Beer Face IPA (HB)

Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA

2008 Fuller Vintage Ale

Oscar Blues Old Chub Scotch Ale

Ryan's Irish Stout (HB)

Nick's Coffee Stout (HB)

Fuller's ESB

Brian's Wheat Ale (HB)

Brian's Better Red Than Dead Ale (HB)

Jeff's ESB (HB)

Skull Splitter Orkney Ale

Fuller's 1845

O'Fallon Wee Heavy

As it typical of our little group, this tasting started out as a hopfest with three of the first four beers being IPA's. Once this thirst was satisfied, we settled into some nice, malty ales. Several Fuller's made appearances, suggesting that this is either our favorite British brewer or we all needed excuses to buy some.

This was, in my opinion, the best showing of homebrews we've had in a long time. There was variety in style and flavor. All the homebrews were of a high standard, even if they all didn't fit under the theme of the evening.

As an added bonus, Jarrett graciously shared some excellent scotch whiskeys with the remaining members who survived the tasting. First up was Clynelish 14 year scotch. This was as smooth and un-peaty a scotch as I've ever had, extremely smooth going down. The Ledaig 10 year scotch that was next was the exact opposite of the first. Describing this drink as "peaty" does not even begin to describe its flavor. This was definitely a sipper, a drink that puts hair on your chest as well as that of your offspring. The two offerings were nice examples of which to compare.

If you attended, how did the evening's tasting go for you? What was your favorite beer of the evening?
